I saw Gun Outfit last night at Echo Curio

They were everything I wanted them to be. The gold room before/after was definitely fun as well, pbr and a shot for 4 bucks???? get out of town! Gun Outfit played a great set, they were loud composed and to the point. This band Residual Echoes also played, I saw them play with Bipolar Bear a few weeks ago at the Smell and was somewhat impressed. They were decent last night, I probably would of enjoyed them more if their singer wasn't a total asshole. He was probably pissed that the room cleared out for them after Gun Outfit.

Ty Segall 7" on Goner Records!!

7.8 out of 10

Wow, I dig it! I just realized that most of the records I review have fairly high reviews, this is because I actually buy all these records and can't afford to buy records that "blow". Please don't let this effect my credibility. This one in particular certainly does not "blow," it's fantastic! And the record is colored by hand with crayons, wonderful. I wish I knew more about this guy so I could write a more educational article, I know he used to play in a band called Party Fowl on PPM. He puts out records on several cool labels including Kill Shaman and Goner Records and has played with The Oh Sees and Jay Reatard(RIP). It's a great Garage/Psychedelic record. I hear alot of late 70's punk in this record Eater, Adverts, and every Killed By Death band. I will be buying much more of his stuff from here on....

Bipolar Bear/Talbot Tagora Split 10"

6.9 out of 10
Label- Ol Factory Records
Released- 2009
Format- 10" vinyl w/download

This was definitely a easy buy for me, I've wanted to pick up both bands records for a while so a split 10" with both bands for only nine bucks seemed like quite the deal. Bipolar Bear is a band from LA that seems to be the loudest band to come out of the Smell for quite some time. With the whole lo-fi singer songwriter thing that's blowing up it's nice to come across a band that proceeds to blow your brains out with sound. They also run a pretty legitimate record label called Kill Shaman Records. I recently saw them live and was very impressed, my favorite part of the band is their Shellac like bass tone and hard hitting drummer. Talbot Tagora is a band from Seattle, WA that has the whole Abe Vigoda tropical punk thing going on. The songs between the two bands are very similar, the biggest difference is the slamming bass tone from Bipolar Bear and the complete lack of a bass player in Talbot Tagora. We'll see in time which side gets played more, right now its the Bipolar Bear side.

Buy it here:

I ripped one song from each side for you, enjoy!

Gun Outfit

Gun Outfit is a band that came out this past year from Olympia WA. Gun Outfit since then have become of a favorite on my turntable. For some reason you don't hear too much about them on the the buzz sites. Right now "indie" means a catchy non-offensive group of well dressed handsome young men/women on a indie label that makes more money than most major labels. Sign a band then spoon feed them onto college radio, smack them all over filter and paste and then land them a lexus commercial, its a full proof plan which I admire and respect but it doesn't really make me excited about punk rock music. Gun Outfit is a hard working blue collar band probably making no money and eating really cheap shitty food. They're a perfect mix of The Meat Puppets, Dinosaur Jr, and well......Gun Outfit!!! I feel like I have to make a public service announcement about this band! Please check they're dates, they're probably playing a house/hall/vegan grocery store near you!
They have a 7" and a wonderful LP titled "DIM LIGHT" out on PPM.
Order their records here:

I ripped the A side of they're debut 7" on PPM, please play loud!

Fugazi Bootleg 7"

How sick is this thing?! I came across it a few months ago and had to pick it up. It contains two tracks taken from a live radio broadcast in Holland. I'm assuming this is from the early 90's due to the song choices. Above all this bootleg showcases how good of a live band Fugazi really was. I dare you to find these tracks anywhere else on the internet, I assure it will be quite difficult. The rough sound quality is from the actually recording itself not the vinyl rip, but if you can get thru it the listening experience will be quite enjoyable. Go ahead and stream the tracks below or click on the link to download them for yourself.
Side A- "Repeater"

Side B- "Return Runaway"

Stay tuned for a Dinosaur Jr. bootleg next!

NEW VINYL RIPS ADDED

Check my older reviews for some more vinyl rips. I added some. Yeah.

I put up the Best Coast and Wounded Lion rips. I'm working on the Infinite Body rip now. Cheers.

Dum Dum Girls- Jail La La 7"

7.8 out of 10

With the recent lo-fi/garage/shoegaze explosion it seems like these all female lo-fi fuzz bands are just falling out of the sky. The groups that have been getting the most attention are Vivian Girls, Best Coast, and of course Dum Dum Girls. In my opinion I think Dum Dum Girls might just have them all beat! The band definitely possesses some great song writing skills and the girls can all actually sing quite well, unlike some of their peers. This 7" contains the first single from their Sub Pop debut album "I Will Be" which hits stores March 30th. The B-side "Play With Fire" is a nice change from the up-beat sing along A-side "Jail La La". "Play With Fire" showcases the bands more shoegaze side, which I love. The track starts with a fuzzy tremelo guitar kicking into an almost My Bloody Valentine type jam. Overall this 7" totally rocks, these girls have their shit together! The band has some previous releases on Captured Tracks, and Art Fag Recordings. In addition to the Sub Pop debut coming out at the end of the month, Dum Dum Girls have a cassette tape EP coming out very soon on Art Fag.

You can order the 7" or preorder the LP here:

You can also preorder the cassette tape "blissed" here:

For your listening pleasure I went ahead and ripped the A-side "Jail La La," you can stream it below.

Infinite Body- "Carve Out The Face Of My God"

Label: PPM
Format: 12" LP
Released: Feb. 2o1o

9.0 out of 10

Infinite Body consists of Los Angeles resident Kyle Parker who has been a consistent face in the LA noise scene for several years. Infinite Body has released a few limited 12"s previously, this being the first for PPM. I will usually give anything put out on PPM a listen and this time it turned out to be quite rewarding. This is a tragically beautiful album all around, covering most human emotions. The first track "Dive" comes crashing in with a full "Berlin Wall" of noise and fuzz only to uncover a beautiful melody lying underneath. Parker takes beautiful melodies and sands them down to the core without picking up the shavings and debris. I suggest you go pick up this record immediately and try to catch him on tour if possible.

THIRSTY AND MISERABLE

Hey everybody,

How are we doing?????? Ok, good.

So on the vinyl topic I went to a record expo in Claremont, CA this past Sunday and took some pictures.

I haven't been to too many record shows before, it was pretty overwhelming. The vibe was pretty weird, it's a perfect mix of a Mexican swap meet and record store. I saw some records that I've only seen on the darkest corners of the internet. Overall, I'd go again.

Matt's sunglasses say "crap."

The outskirts of LA look pretty weird.

Look at those animals!

I think this whole box was full of Misfits 7 inch's, all about $50 bucks a pop.

!!!666!!!

Holy crap! 1985 Sonic Youth "Death Valley" 12" single on Homestead Records (pre-SST)

Iggy Pop & David Bowie live together in 77'! If you can't tell by the cover this is definitely when they were fucking. This is the "Lust For Life/The Idiot" part of Iggy's career which is my favorite! It was re-issued last year on Cleopatra Records.

A side: Raw Power, 1969, Turn Blue, Sister Midnight, I Need Somebody, Search 'N' Destroy.

B side: TV eye, Dirt, Fun time, Gimme Danger, No Fun, I wanna Be Your Dog

As I carried this record around the expo I could feel the glares of jealousy everywhere around me. This is an original Spacemen 3 "The Perfect Prescription" LP. This is my favorite Spacemen 3 record and ultra rare. The godfathers of shoegaze music. So much fuzz...so much reverb...soo much awesome!

A side: Take me to the Other Side, Walkin with Jesus, Ode to Street Hassle, Ecstasy Symphony, Transparent Radiation (Flashback)

B side: Feel So Good, Things'll Never be the Same, Come Down Easy, Call the Doctor

What a great re-issue! Flipper "Sex Bomb Baby" LP on "4 Men With Beards" records which features the classic 1981 single "Ha Ha Ha." I love Flipper because when they came out most punk bands were set out to sound as fast and tough as possible, Flipper on the other hand set out to sound as slow and annoying as possible! YES!

A side: Sex Bomb, Love Canal, Ha Ha Ha, Sacrifice, Ever

B side: Get Away, Earthworm, The Game's Got a Price, The Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly, Brainwash

Earth "The Bees Made Honey in the Lions Skull"

This record came out last year on Southern Lord records in various packages, this being the most impressive (and now out of print). It looks more like a sacred religious book than a record, the sleeves are actually real bible material and opens up like a book. Bill Frisell plays guitar on three of the tracks as well. I think I've listened to this record everyday since i bought it. Truly great stuff.

A1: Omens and Portents 1 : The Driver

A2: Rise to Glory

B3: Miami Morning Coming Down II (Shine)

B4: Engine of Ruin

C5: Omens and Portents II : Carrion Crow

C6: Hung From the Moon

D7: The Bees Made Honey in the Lions Skull

D8: Junkyard Priest

Thank you for reading my little baby blog here, I'm going to try and post as frequently and interestingly as possible. I'm headed out to some shows this week I'll try to cover most of them.

"I am of average intelligence. There's nothing special about me. If I can get this far, I would be very suprised if you couldn't get at least twice as far. Fuck them. keep your blood clean, your body lean, and your mind sharp."

More 7" Reviews!

My last batch from In The Red Records and PPM came in. SCOOREEEE!!!!!

Included was....

Best Coast- "Something In The Way" 7inch

Wounded Lion- "Friendly?" 7inch,

Mark Sultan- "I am the end" 7inch

The Strange Boys- "Woe Is You and Me" 7inch

Vivian Girls- "I Can't Stay" 7inch

I'm decided to review Wounded Lion and Best Coast being that they are the most recent releases. (and both bands are from LA!!!)

Wounded Lion- "Friendly" 7inch

8.0 out of 10

Wounded Lion is a LA band that has been catching my eye lately, they've been playing with band such as Ty Segall, No Age and Vivian Girls. This 7" is their only available release so far until their LP on In The Red comes out (TBA). The band has been described as part Velvet Underground, Modern Lovers, and Jesus and Mary Chain. The record starts off with the single "Friendly?" a noisy percussive post-punk fucked up blues jam with some real silly "makes no sense" lyrics. The song is will get your head bomping and your hand reaching for the volume knob to crank it up! The next song "Big Boots" is a straight Jonathan Richman/Modern Lovers punk jam. Believe it or not they finish the record with a mind blowing Creedence Clearwater Revival cover, you've never heard bad moon rising this way and will never hear it again like this. If the full length is anything like this one I'm sure you'll be seeing their name in much bigger blogs than mine.

http://www.myspace.com/wlion

Here's a vinyl rip of "Friendly?"

next is...

Best Coast- "Something in the Way" 7inch

7.5 out of 10

Best Coast is the latest band to rise out of the lo-fi/garage rock/spector pop scene, they're peers include Vivian Girls, Crocodiles, Wavves, Dum Dum Girls and so on. The band is fronted by ex-Pocahaunted member, Beth Cosentino. Best Coast have released a series of 7inch's over the past year and a half, this being the latest and only one still in print! The records have been going for enormous prices on ebay, some well over $100! I was skeptical about the band due to all the hype but I have to say I can't stop listening to it! I guarantee that in 6 months Best Coast will be the next pitchfork darlings for sure!

Fresh Wax

Alright!! I'm back with the fresh tracks!

Today my bag from amoeba included.....

Junior Murvin- "Police & Thieves" (1976) 12" LP, Junior is a classic reggae/dub artist who captured the restless civil war culture of the 70's. With problems occurring in Chile, Angola, Soweto, northern Ireland and of course Jamaica this record was claimed to really capture the moment on wax! Despite the quite serious subject matter the album is ridiculously catchy to the ear, Junior's smooth falsetto voice glides like a bird over the band's super tight rhythm section. The album's Single "Police and Thieves" was on England's version of the billboard The Melody Maker's top ten for 23 consecutive weeks, almost half the year!!! Like many others i first heard the great song not from Junior but from the Clash, The Clash boldly did their own arrangement of the classic song. I think this record is a must have for any reggae enthusiast, or an easy starting point for those who want to dig a little deeper in the reggae/dub world than Bob Marley or Peter Tosh.
Here's a rip of "Police & Thieves":

link.... (if you promise to buy it eventually!)...

I also picked up....

Dead Meadow- "Old Growth" (2009)-
This was my first Dead Meadow purchase, the beautiful double 180 gram gate-fold vinyl was catching my eye for some time and also the record was released on the always trustworthy label Matador who have made quite a dent in the world of indie music, just recently coming out strong with artists such as Jay Reatard, Times New Viking, Fucked Up, Cold Cave and so on.... So with the Matador Label on the back I decided it would be a safe bet the i would play the grooves out of this thing. The record is defiantly for the headphones. "Old Growth" is very psychedelic, groove based, and stoner friendly! I'll have to admit i was hoping for a few more fuzz pedals and maybe a wah wah thrown in there some where but the album did not disappoint. Lots of Colors and Scenery, give a listen some time!

http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/3989715/Dead_Meadow_-_Old_Growth

and for my third purchase...

Total Abuse- "Sex Pig EP" 200?
Wow, it's been a while since I've heard that much chaos, violence, frustration and noise on 7 inches of vinyl. The Sex Pig EP is defiantly a punch in the face. There's seems to be a influx of great hardcore bands coming out lately. You can defiantly hear the minor threat and black flag riffs in here but as if they were in a POW camp for 20 years and just released.

enjoy
